The Russian writer Dostoevski is regarded as one of the world's great novelists. In Russia he was surpassed only by Leo Tolstoi.

Fedor Mikhailovich Dostoevski was born on Nov. 11, 1821, in a Moscow hospital where his father was a physician. At 13 Fedor was sent to a Moscow boarding school, then to a military engineering school in St. Petersburg. Shortly after graduating he resigned his commission in order to devote his time to writing.

Dostoevski had published two novels and several sketches and short stories when he was arrested along with a group of about 20 others with whom he had been studying French socialist theories. After the 1848 revolutions in Western Europe, Russia's Czar Nicholas I decided to round up all of that country's revolutionaries, and in April 1849 Dostoevski's group was imprisoned. Dostoevski and several others were sentenced to be shot, but at the last minute their sentence was changed to four years of hard labor in a prison in Omsk, Siberia. Dostoyevsky is one of the most famous Russian writers recognized around the world. He was born on October 30 (November 11 N.S.) in 1821 in Moscow.

When he was 16 his mother passed away and he moved to Saint-Petersburg and entered Engineering School.

He wrote his first novel Poor Folk in 1845 and some time later second one The Double. The first novel had positive critics’ previews but the second one not really.

In 1849 he was arrested and sentenced to death but then it was changed to 4 years in prison. He served his penal sentence in Omsk.

In 1857 he married Matia Isaeva. He got eligible for amnesty but only in 1859 he returned to Saint-Petersburg. He was set free of police custody only in 1875.

Dostoyevsky loved traveling and went to Europe often. He started gambling there and lost a lot of money. As a result he wrote a novel the Gambler.

In 1864 his wife passed away and in 1867 he married his stenographer Anna Grigoryevna Dostoyevskaya. She gave birth to 4 children but only Lyubov and Fedor lived a long life, two other children died when they were little. He didn’t have any
